Seventy years after this invasion the European Marine Energy Centre opens at Billin Croo, Orkney. It is in reaction to global warming, another serious attack on human life, and aims to reduce CO2 output from burning fossil fuels.
It is to test for a 200MW wave farm being developed by the commercial sector. The aim is to build facilities for 27GW output by 2050.
Meanwhile, Edinburgh University’s wave tank makes 28m high waves at the same time as varying tidal currents. That, too, is being used to test new ways of generating electricity.
Artists are also finding new ways to capture the power of waves.
