Theo Jansen uses recycled plastic bottles to build toy animals that walk. He calls them Strandbeest and on the sandy beach near Deflt his specially designed beasts walk and glide on the wind.
His machines react to the changing weather and control their own movements. They are made from the yellow plastic pipe that Dutch electricians use to cover their cables, and they have legs, feet and sails.
Jansen expects to build forms that can survive on the beach through days of different weather. One form can survive storms, with legs that dig-in to the sand when atmospheric pressure falls.
Another form can detect water – and steer the best escape from it.
