A new terminal, T2, opens at London Heathrow in June and has Slipstream, a sculpture by Richard Wilson.
This is in an open-ended atrium between a multistorey car park and the terminal proper. The sculpture is based on the tracks left behind from a stunt plane’s movements and tracks its course as if it were an extrusion of solid air,
The sculpture is a solid form in riveted aluminium and weighs 77 tons. It was quite an engineering feat to make it hang off the building’s columns.
Wilson had a childhood love of the suspended blue whale in the Natural History Museum
